Heart of Dakota Beyond - BLHFHG - Week 11 in Review

Sunday, November 17, 2013

Welcome to our 11th week in review :) This week we continued our study with the Pilgrims. After they settled at Plymouth, the Pilgrims had to work really hard to settle the land. We read our history readings from the perspective of a young boy named Thomas. It was great to see history through the eyes of a boy not unlike my two guys. Aedan enjoyed sitting in on his younger brother's history lessons this week. We had a busy week of field trips as well. We went to a modern art museum, a zoo class on Tigers, and a dairy farm. Who says homeschoolers don't have any fun?

Silas made an oiled paper window for HOD art. We learned that the Pilgrims used oiled paper to let the light through the windows of their homes.

Here is Silas oiling his paper window.

We're studying the Pilgrims at the perfect time because we get to celebrate Thanksgiving soon!

We read about how the Pilgrims cut down trees and made frames for their homes. They all had to work together to get the first home in Plymouth built.

We built a frame with straws.

Our timeline is filling in nicely. This week we added Plymouth to our grid.

Silas continues to add more of God's word to his little heart :)

In science we learned about axes and wedges and how the Pilgrims used them to cut down trees, and split logs.

Scissors are wedges we use almost every day.
We used a wedge to keep a door open, and other uses for wedges.

We read John 4:27-38. We learned about sowing, reaping and harvesting. Silas planted rows of corn...

.....reaped and harvested them.

Silas records our activity on his science log.

We continue to really enjoy Elemental Science. We originally had 2 tadpoles. One of them turned into the cute little frog you see here. We had a tadpole casualty and a funeral. The nice folks at Grow a Frog sent us a replacement tadpole, and that one died too. I decided to not ask for another replacement. There were many tears over the ones we lost already. Fortunately one of them made it. This little guy is named David. Well that wraps up yet another week. I think we're almost officially a third of the way through the year. I can't believe it! See you next week :)

  1. So much fun! I'm finally able to make the rounds and leave comments. We have had so much fun with Beyond and I can see the same excitement in your sons' smiles.

Thank you again for your help with Elemental Science. We are really enjoying the experiments. I put a shout-out to you on my blog :)

    Have a lovely Thanksgiving!
