HOD Creation to Christ - CtC Week 10 in Review

Sunday, November 10, 2013

We're plugging away here at Monarch Room. We completed Unit 10 this week, and I'm starting to feel like this year is flying by. We have been enjoying the beautiful fall weather, and the last few mild days before winter. This week our studies focused on Samuel, Saul and David. I have always loved the narrative stories of the bible. I love how we really take the time each week to flesh out the stories, and make them memorable.

We're back to our watercolor projects this week. This time we studied the poem "Misgiving." I have to say that I really love this one. There's a reason Robert Frost was so respected.

These projects just keep getting better and better. It's fun to see Aedan's confidence in painting grow each week.

Of course when you study David, you have to read about the story of David and Goliath right? Our history project this week was to make a sling. This was one time where I really wish I had a daughter to help out. Teaching boys to braid was, well, interesting. We got through it, and they were so thrilled to have their own sling. Each boy always wants to participate in each other's projects. While they may not be studying the same things, they still get to share experiences and knowledge. I love that!

This is one of Aedan's history notebooking pages. It shows how the kind of sling David may have had, and how it was used.

Of course we had to test it out! We tried various "stones."

And as always, Aedan's little brother joined him in the fun :)

I can't wait to have an open house for our family, so they can see all the work my boys have done.

Aedan's written narration was about how David spared Saul's life when he could have taken it.

His copywork had to do with David and Goliath.

We continue to use and love our essential oils. They keep making their appearance in Aedan's work haha! Who would have thought that David and Saul were anointed with Young Living oil!?

I keep forgetting to take pictures of all the wonderful books we've been reading for storytime, and DITHOR. Right now we're reading Jashub's Journal. It is a living book that shows in story how Old Testament law worked. We've really enjoyed it. It makes the Old Testament come more alive, and easier to understand.

At first I thought Aedan would complain about the music CD that was purchased to aid him in the memorization of Philippians 2. He never has, and so far he knows all of Phil 2: 1-10. I do too since I listen along with him.

Aedan began his study of reptiles this week. His science experiment taught us how a chameleon's skin changes colors. The experiment called for water color markers, but we only had watercolor pencils.

He dropped water on the paper to see how the colors would mix.

We sort of got the picture. This would definitely had worked better with markers, but the colors did mix enough for us to see how it works.

This is Aedan's lab sheet for the above activity.

Aedan keeps looking to see how many more pages he has left of his Apologia book. We may have to add another when we're done with this. I haven't decided yet.

Aedan wrote about the lizards and snakes. This kid is starting to know way too much! I told him he was going to start having to teach me science :)
