Heart of Dakota Beyond - BLHFHG - Week 32 in Review

Sunday, May 4, 2014

Welcome to our Beyond Unit 32 week in review! This unit we traveled west along the Oregon and California Trails. We also learned about the California Gold Rush, and what it was like for children during that period in history.

We read Psalm 121:1-8 and learned that God is always watching over us.

Our art activity was to make a globe held by 2 hands to remind us that God is always watching over his creation.

Silas's timeline is filling up. Only a few entries to go!

In geography we learned about the Oregon Trail.

In history we read about a young named Nell who was left alone to care for her twin siblings. While she was sleeping a bear came through the front door. Silas quickly grabbed Beary, his favorite stuffed friend.

In science we learned about bears, and how they have paws without thumbs like we have. I wrapped Silas's hands with tape, so that he no longer had use of his thumbs.

Then I asked him to pick up different items around the room. It was more difficult without thumbs, but he mostly managed.

He was able to pick up most of the items, but decided that he'd rather have thumbs!

For a treat I had him pick up a few leftover chocolate eggs. He thought that was the best thing ever!

This is his science sheet from the above activity.

Our history activity was to learn about how quickly the population of California grew from 1848-1852 during the Gold Rush. We made a bar graph to show how the population grew from 14,000 to 250,000 in only 4 years!

In science we read about minerals, and the most precious of them all Gold. For our science activity we placed pennies in the bottom of a full sink to represent gold.

Silas learned that sometimes the reflection can fool our eyes into seeing an item in a different place than it actually is. He pointed to an item, and pushed his finger down to where he thought the penny was.

Then we panned for gold.

This is his science sheet from the above activity.
Our poem of the week was "A Child's Prayer."

Our memory verse was Proverbs 18:24.

In elemental science we learned how water travels up the stem to the flower.

We colored 3 different vases of water. Hopefully I'll have pictures next week to show what happened next :)
