Welcome to Apologia Botany Lesson 2! This week we studied seeds! We are having so much fun learning how plant life grows. I am learning a few things myself. I'm hoping to plant more when the spring comes :)
Our first activity was to examine a bean seed. First we soaked them in warm water.
This is what they looked like after an hour.
The testa, or outer covering of the seed shriveled.
After soaking we were able to look inside our seed.
We could better see the seed parts inside.
Silas labeled a seed.
I checked out books at the library about seeds. Glenna's Seeds is an especially sweet book.
Here are our science supplies for the week. It sure helps to have them ready!
We read about what seeds need to grow. We put one set of seeds in a dark closet and one in the refrigerator.
The last seed we taped to a sunny window.
The seed in the refrigerator didn't grow at all. It had water, but no warmth or sun.
The second seed that was in the closet did grow some. It had water and warmth, but no light.
The last seed had water, warmth and sun. This one of course grew the best!
We charted our seed's growth.
I'm thankful to have the notebook journal to work with. After printing many of our notebooking pages for the year, the last thing I want to do is print anything! Silas filled out info on seed parts in his notebook.
Hooray! Our seeds are growing in our light hut! This is lemon balm.
Our basil is growing as well. I started seeing tiny signs of life in the chamomile. By next week we should have a better picture of that one.
Silas had to design a seed and a seed coat. This kid loves fried chicken (a major treat he doesn't get often, but it is his favorite.) His seed is a Fried Chicken Plant seed. Sigh. I try to eat as much plant based food as possible, but I don't think this kid is going to be a vegan. See you next time!
