Week in Review - HOD RtR - Unit 35

Monday, May 4, 2015

We have come to the end of our studies in HOD Resurrection to Reformation. Boo hoo! What a great year! In our final Unit 35 we studied the Puritans, The Salem Witch Trials, The Amish, Jakob Amman, Peter the Great and Isaac Watts. I will write a separate post with my end of the year musings for both boys soon :)

In science we learned about various inventors who experimented with flight. Our science activity was to create a glider that demonstrated lift and ways to modify it to make it more successful. This week's activity used verbal brain power that no one in my family apparently has. We (at least 3 of us) read the instructions for this glider several times. Fortunately one of the sweet HOD moms on the FB groups built it for me to see. Yay! I'm so thankful for all those wise and helpful moms! Silas also wanted to build one.

We may have made our fuselage too long, but these did fly. We changed how much clay we added to the front end of the airplane.

We laughed a lot at these wonky planes!

Then this happened...

...which ended with this. We laughed and laughed and (laughed.) Fortunately a paper airplane doesn't hurt much even if it hits you in the head. Next year we get to build a real glider in science! I will stand clear of Aedan's launch path for that! Wood won't be as friendly! I'm so excited for Aedan to be able to work on those building labs in Exploration Education next year!

Aedan added his timeline entries: The Salem Witch Trials, Peter I of Russia and Isaac Watts - Hymn Writer. He also researched the Amish.

Our history activity was to make either Amish sugar cookies or Russian tea cakes. The boys loved these Amish cookies. I decided against the second batch of cookies. We have cooked a LOT lately and it is almost shorts season! We made Russian tea cakes with MFW ECC when we studied Russia, so I don't feel so bad.

This is Aedan's final narration of the year which was about Isaac Watts who was a famous hymn writer.

History Notebooking page of the week.

Aedan completed his reading of Pericles, Prince of Tyre.

He mapped the expansion of Russia.

This is Emily Dickinson according to Aedan. I love this kid :)

And Immortality.

The End.

  1. Yay! Congratulations on finishing well. We've got about 4 weeks left and trying to get through them.

I'm actually getting exciting to start "preparing" for Preparing Hearts.

  2. Thank you! I am SO excited that we will be in the same guide again. That makes me so happy :)

  3. I meant to get around to all my dear friends on Sunday and wish them all a Happy Mother's Day. I thought I left a comment here, but I think I got sidetracked when my family arrived and must not have clicked the robot thing right.

I do hope that your Mother's Day was beautiful. I had a few hours with all my girls and grand daughter together and that was priceless.

...and I'm excited to be doing the same guide alongside you! My plans are to start prepping this week, but we are still finishing up our last few weeks here and enjoying a lot of outdoor time while the weather permits.

((hugs)) I'm thinking of you as I diffuse YL Inner Child today.

  4. I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day too! We are enjoying beautiful weather here too. I look forward to seeing how you set Preparing up. You always have the best ideas!

  5. Yay, so happy you ended on such a wonderful note this year! Those airplanes are too cool! Aedan is too cute! And good idea to stay clear of his launch path, lol. It's been such a joy to follow your studies this year, though a bit tempting at times! (The goodies you make!!!)

  6. These planes only "flew" because they were launched by a tweenage boy. I need to stop cooking and start eating more salad!

Thank you so much for visiting :) I adore hearing from you!
