Week in Review - HOD MtMM - Unit 3

Friday, September 2, 2016

Happy Friday! Week 3 started feeling a lot better than our first few weeks of school. By now we are getting into our groove, and days are shortening up a bit for the most part. Aedan has been getting up early each morning to start Bible study and get ahead of the day. That really helps on days we have to be at afternoon activities. He does this of his own volition. If I ever suggested it, he wouldn't do it without complaint (my independent son needs this to be his own idea.) So, I just quietly set aside a few things that need to be accomplished and let him decide how to manage his time and if he would like a shorter or longer afternoon.

One thing that I am really enjoying seeing is Aedan's work for his Nature Drawing & Journaling book. I asked him what his favorite subjects are so far, and this one was at the top of the list. He has been adding elements here and there 2 days a week. This is the completed first page. This journal is used alongside the poetry study, so he added some copywork from our poem this week.

This week his assignment was to do a nature study on the sky and trees. It was an all gray and rainy day, so he did the other option which was to use the author's image as a guide. I like the idea of letting him replicate some of the author's pictures to get a sense of how to draw in this way. He used his new Prismacolors all the time even when he doesn't have to in his other drawings.

The other study was a tree study. This was his favorite picture.

He also designed elements for the front and back covers. The front cover was a placard with his name and address with a pretty picture of a grassy field.

Our history studies focused on Asia. We read about the lives of John Ross (a Bible translator in Korea), Hudson Taylor (Missionary to China), Queen Min of Korea, The Sino-Japanese War and Pandita Ramabai a Christian in India.

Robert Thomas - Korean Bible Smuggler

Aedan's history project was to write this Korean message. This is the translation:

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. - Matthew 7:12

We talked about some of the martyrs of the 20th century. These are 10 martyrs buried at Westminster Abbey.

Sino-Japanese War - 1865-1895

Aedan wrote a headline for the Sino-Japanese War and the beginnings of an article about it.

Pandita Ramabai - Missionary to India

Our Worthy Words excerpt this week was written by Pandita Ramabai.

Aedan added information to his notebook page for Economics. This week we also studied the life of President James Madison.

Aedan is doing a study on our home state. I found this book on our shelf, and he will be reading a little of it each week to add to the information he is learning already.

We have added a once weekly Chemistry 101 DVD each week. These videos are awesome! Silas even sits with us and watches each week. I feel like they are presented in such an interesting way.

Last week our carbon dioxide experiment didn't work, but we watched the same experiment on the DVD. They did it a little differently than the way we tried to do it last week. We tried it again the Chemistry 101 way, and it worked!

We also mixed litmus solution and denatured alcohol for future use. It wasn't complete dissolved yet, so we will finish the second step next week. That's all for now! See you next week!
