Week in Review - HOD CtC - Unit 9

Thursday, October 13, 2016

This week we read more about the Judges of Israel. We read about Jepthah, Ruth and Naomi, Samson, Eli and his sons and the Philistines. We read about the unfortunate end to some of these people this week. Silas is sometimes astonished by the stories in the Bible even though we have read these stories many times before.

We read about how the Philistines conquered Israel.

We had another break from watercolor paintings this week which was perfect for our last week before break. We still had a history project to create a Philistine helmet. Silas really enjoyed making this. First he painted the band, and then he curled the fringes.

He enjoyed being silly with his helmet.

The cat was especially enamored with his bouncy hat.

Silas is doing a great job with adding to his notebook each week.

Samson is born (1155 B.C.)

Ark of the Covenant Captured by Philistines (1117 B.C.)

Silas wrote about how the Philistines captured the ark and how in its presence their idol fell and was destroyed.

We read about Ruth and Naomi, and Silas copied a portion into his notebook.

We studied a map the map to find what cities were ruled by the Philistines during this time and where the tabernacle was when Samuel was alive.

We started our new storytime book Jashub's Journal. This book does a great job of explaining how the law applied to everyday life.

In science we studied Jupiter.

We learned why it's many layers don't mix by demonstrating how each liquid has a different density just as the gases on Jupiter follow the same laws.

Silas added what he learned about Jupiter to his science notebook. That's all for a few weeks. See you when we are rested after our break!

  1. Hmm it looks like your site ate my first comment (it was
super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I had written and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your
blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I'm still new to everything.
Do you have any helpful hints for beginner blog writers?
    I'd certainly appreciate it.

    1. Oh I'm so sorry your comment got lost! Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I have taken a bit of a blog break it would appear, but I plan to get back to it soon :) I don't have much advice as a blogger other than to maybe commit to a reasonable amount of posts or it stops feeling as fun :) I started this blog originally to keep myself accountable to actually do school each week and also to be a help and encouragement to other new homeschoolers. Just find your why and all else will fall into place.
