Handmade Gift Ideas and Holiday Recipes {Giveaway}

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

Happy December everyone! Some of you that follow Monarch Room know that we love our essential oils. We use them for about everything you can think of under the sun. We keep our immune systems ship-shape, make our own personal care products, and also scent our home with these amazing oils.  As we head into the holiday season I wanted to share some of the ways we use them this time of year and also share a few handmade holiday gift ideas. There are so many people in our family that often we draw names for gift giving. It's still fun for me to make some handmade gifts even though we aren't officially supposed to buy gifts for the adults in the family. Here are a few of the things I'm sharing with my loved ones this year. Keep an eye out for a giveaway at the end!

I love unpacking our Christmas decorations each year because our ornaments are a treasure. I have ones from back when I was a kid or special ones from loved ones who have passed. My very favorites are the handmade ornaments my kids have made through the years. Little hands pressed into clay, cinnamon ornaments, and pipe cleaner ornaments adorn our family tree. This year we decided to make essential oil diffuser ornaments. We purchased Crayola air-dry terracotta clay. Silas rolled it out to get it ready.

I grabbed a snowflake stamp and Silas stamped snowflakes into the clay.

You could use any stamp or none at all if you prefer.

We used holiday cookie cutters to cut out the shapes. The clay is pretty sticky, so we greased them with a little cooking spray to make the clay easier to remove from the cutters.

We dried them overnight on a cooling rack. I waited until they were slightly hardened before transferring them to the rack, so the rack wouldn't leave lines on the back.

We tied simple loops with twine.

Voila! How easy is that? All you need to do now is add your essential oil of choice.

These are super simple little gifts. You can add any essential oil you like. If you have an artificial tree it's really nice to add a conifer oil to scent your tree like the real thing.

Of course this time of year there is always something baking in the oven. This time we made peppermint brownies! These were absolutely delish. Young Living vitality oils are safe to add to food. The vitality oils are supplements and safe for internal use. This is a great alternative to artificial flavorings. These brownies taste just like Andes mints. YUM!

This was a great recipe, but you could totally cheat with box brownies (wink.)

Another thing we love to have this time of year is hot apple cider. We added these 3 oils to spice it up. This drink is so lovely on a cold winter day. By the way, this also will scent your house in such a beautiful way!

Make sure to check your bottles to see if they are safe for internal use. YL is guaranteed for safety and purity. It's really easy to tell which are ok to add to food. The vitality oils are marked with a white label like these in the picture.

Who doesn't love to soak in a hot bath this time of year? I absolutely adore Frankincense. It is my hands down #1 favorite essential oil. It's especially lovely combined with lavender in this recipe. This is really simple to make and makes great gifts. I'll be making baggies of this to share with the ladies in my family (you will know I love you if I part with my frankincense for the record.) You could substitute many different oil combinations. This combo is especially great for dry winter skin.

You could also just simply use Epsom Salt and mix whatever oils you like. Make sure to not just add essential oils directly to the water without a carrier oil, bath gel or salt. It will just sit on the top of the water otherwise.

How did I live without a diffuser before? I was definitely a candle-aholic before I knew that synthetic fragrances were harmful. There are dozens of combinations you can put into your diffuser to make it feel like any season of the year.

These are two of Nate's favorite oils. He has a diffuser bracelet he wears that he often puts any of the conifer oils on to help with regular daily stress during the workday. It makes him feel like he's walking around a Colorado forest.

Here are a few great ideas on what to try in your diffuser this time of year. I'm currently enjoying Balsam Branches.

I have many different essential oil singles and blends, however, there are a few that make my top ten list. Christmas Spirit is one of my very faves especially this time of year. This oil smells like a relaxing evening next to the fire place with all your favorite people. Christmas Spirit is a blend of Orange, Cinnamon and Northern Lights Black Spruce. It is absolutely lovely.

Being in a giving mood I wanted to giveaway one 5ml bottle of Christmas Spirit and one diffuser ornament. All you have to do is add a few drops of this fabulous oil to your ornament. These would work well hanging in the car too. All you have to do is enter the giveaway is to fill out the form below. The giveaway starts 12/5 and will end 12/10. The winner will be randomly chosen.

  1. This is truly over the top! ♥ I need some of your energy - please send it my way! Thank you for the permission to use a box mix, haha - I did. I made peppermint chocolate ganache cupcakes using Girl Scout Thin Mint cupcake mix. :) I added just one drop of peppermint oil to the ganache and they were sooo good. I also love a drop of peppermint oil in Tamara's easy sugar cookie glaze - on top of her sugar cookies, of course. Oh how I love thee peppermint in the winter! I need to go diffuse some right now so I can get started on school. So happy to be on this journey with you friend! ♥

    1. Box brownies are sometimes even better! Trust me. This energy is short lived. I had a rare Saturday with some hours by myself.

  2. Bath soak!! Definitely my favorite recipe of the ones you listed. I have peppermint oil, but haven't used it in cooking yet. No one really likes minty things, so not really any need to yet. But I LOVE diffusing it. You also have some new (to me) recipes to diffuse!

    1. Peppermint is incredible for about a hundred different things! My husband's favorite ice cream is chocolate chip mint, so these were a hit with him and definitely my boys. I have another family member that would think mint in brownies is terrible, so we might be the weird ones :)
