Week in Review - HOD MtMM - Unit 17

Wednesday, December 28, 2016

Here's where we finally took a winter break! Instead of taking the week before Christmas off, we are taking the week after. That week is usually anything less than restful. I thought the boys would enjoy some time to enjoy their gifts. I know some folks take 2 weeks off at Christmas. Instead we will take another break coming up in February. I'm trying to take more regular breaks instead of ending so soon like we did last year.

This is my mom's idea of Christmas chocolate. Ha! She was more excited to see my reaction than to see the kids' faces. I have never been able to stop her from being generous. I just let her now. Someday I'm sure I'll be the same kind of Grandma.

I couldn't bring myself to do an update last week. We were all waaaay too fried! I feel so much more rested after yesterday's slow day. Last week we started our study of World War II.

Adolf Hitler - German Chancellor - 1932 A.D.

Aedan wrote about some of the events of WWII and what led up to it in the first place. Neutral Spain in this picture cracks me up.

This is an image of Japanese, Chinese and German women holding up paddles of their dictators. Aedan wrote what these three men had in common.

Aedan is reading Frederich which is about a Jewish boy during this period.

Francisco Franco - Spanish Head of State - 1936-1975 A.D.

This is a Spanish political cartoon of the period.

A hand written letter by Franco. My sister and brother in law are missionaries that live in Spain. They have seen the aftermath of Franco's regime even all these years later.

The fascists and communists were fighting in this part of the world during this time.

Winston Churchill - British Prime Minister - 1940-1945, 1951-1955 A.D.

Aedan drew a picture of Winston Churchill for Draw and Write Through History.

We finished The Elements. The next book we were supposed to read was Atoms in the Family. I decided to sub it out for this book that I thought Aedan might enjoy.

I made notebook pages and a simple schedule with activities.

Once a week I have him filling out a portion of the periodic table. He should be very familiar with it after this year. He has read so many great books to go along with the study of Chemistry.

His nature journal is still coming along beautifully! Aedan's art is developing in so many ways. We just got the great news that he was chosen to be a part of a art initiative for teens in our city. He had to apply, and I was so hoping he would get in. He starts that in a few weeks. I can't wait to see what he learns! How was your week?
