Week in Review - HOD MtMM - Unit 19

Friday, January 20, 2017

We are moving right along through our year. For the past few weeks we have focused on WWII. We have really enjoyed all of the books that have told the story from many different perspectives. So much was going on in the world during this time, so it's been really enlightening to hear how this war was experienced throughout the world.

Aedan drew a Sherman tank from Draw and Write Through History.

It was perfect that drawing the tank was his history drawing because the tank has an important part in the movie we saw this week about the tragic loss of Jewish lives during the war. If you've never seen Life is Beautiful, you must. It's absolutely heartbreaking, but as the title says, is also so very beautiful.

D-Day Invasion - Normandy (June 6, 1944 A.D.)
This battle causes this mother's heart to shudder. I can't imagine how many moms were on their knees this day. The older my boys get the more and more thankful I am that we currently are not in a war as these young men experienced. What bravery...

This reads "Hitler the Liberator." How far from the truth could one have ever been?

Fortunately Hitler's forces were driven back, and Europe would finally be free from the threat of Germany's assault on that part of the world.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer - 1906-1945 A.D - I was very moved by the bravery of the confessing church of this time.

We mapped how many Jews lost their lives and the places their countries of origins. This was a very sobering week. I'm thankful that we got to read stories of those who rose up to help and fight against the terrible tyrants of the time.

Aedan read the words of Esther Cohen. She was a holocaust survivor who shared her experience and her thankfulness for those who fought for her freedom.

Our storytime book is heartbreaking, but it helps us to see that the loss of life and liberty was experienced by true flesh and blood people.

Corrie ten Boom - 1892-1983 A.D.

Aedan wrote about Corrie ten Boom for his narration.

William McKinley was our president of the week. The boys are both learning how each president had their flaws and strengths.

Welllll.....I couldn't stay away from Rod & Staff for too long. We were enjoying IEW Fix it, but as I looked forward I wasn't sure it was what I wanted long term. It was a nice break, but we were able to see R&S with fresh eyes. Maybe someday I'll write about why we continue to stick with it.

Aedan drew a tree study with three different media.

Aedan had his first art program class. This is going to be such an incredible opportunity. He gets to work with 3 mentors. At the end their art will be displayed at our local contemporary museum. He is so excited!

How is your year going so far?
