Week in Review - HOD MtMM Unit 26

Sunday, March 12, 2017

We are really enjoying history this year. After leaving the ancients, medieval times, and the American Revolution behind, it's nice to hear the voices of the people we are learning about. One of the benefits of the modern age is we have footage and audio of the last hundred years that are preserved for all time which at times is for the best and for the worst.

This week one of our focuses was on modern evangelists. I had the opportunity to hear Billy Graham preach in his later years in one of his last crusade tours in our city. I've always loved Billy Graham, but I have even fonder feelings toward Ruth Bell Graham. Sometimes we never get to meet our mentors, but I would consider her one of mine.

Billy Graham Begins His Crusades - 1947 A.D.

I'm so glad we have studied the men and women during this period of history who were serving God while it seemed all hope was lost.

We listened to a few Billy Graham clips to hear his preaching style.

We mapped all the locations of all of Billy Graham's crusades.

Our history project was to make an evangelist bookmark. He will share these scriptures with us next week.

Ed Sullivan Show Runs in the U.S. - 1948-1971 A.D.

We watched various clips of different singers on The Ed Sullivan Show. The boys thought it sounded like girls on a roller coaster when we listened to Elvis.

Bill Halley & His Comets

Nat King Cole

We read about the entertainment Americans watched on TV.

Luis Palau Begins His First Crusades - 1980's.

This is Luis Palau in his later years.

Luis Palau was considered to be the Billy Graham of South America. He came to speak in our city around the same time as Billy Graham. I wish I had known then that it was worth going.

Worthy Words this week was a speech by William Faulkner who spoke to the fear Americans had of the Atomic Bomb.

Our president of the week was Dwight D. Eisenhower.

We finished our study of Chemistry, and we started a new study of Evolution with this resource from Master Books. We watch a video, and Aedan reads from the book. So far he likes it (other than the video on spontaneous generation. YUCK.)

This week Aedan studied skies and sunsets on water for his nature journal.

He finished his Lightning Lit book. Next week he will start the lesson, and begin his paper. We only have one more novel to read for the year. I can't believe how close to the end we are!
