Week in Review - HOD MtMM Unit 35

Friday, May 19, 2017

We have come to the end of the end here at Monarch Room. My first born school completed his final year of middle school this week. I will have more to say about our year as a whole later, but for now I will update our final week.

Since we finished our work we have taken every opportunity to spend time with friends. Our sweet friends drove up from the country to come and see Aedan's artwork at the Kemper Museum. I still haven't shared about this, but I took lots of pictures. More to come soon!

In our final week of history we read about Nelson Mandela and Apartheid, 9/11, and the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Apartheid Laws Repealed - South Africa - 1991

We watched a video on the day Nelson Mandela was freed from prison.

9-11 Terrorist Attack on U.S. - September 11, 2001

Instead of having Aedan write about the Rescue and Redeem reading I had him write about 9/11.

This was Ground Zero after the 9/11 attack.

We watched a Billy Graham sermon that took place shortly after 9/11 on the final day of school. This was a sweet end to listen once again to the simple gospel message.

War in Iraq - March 20, 2003 - December 15, 2011

Aedan wrote about the invasion of Iraq.

One of my favorite things this year was seeing Aedan's beautiful artwork in his Nature Study Journal. Here is a video flip through all the pages. He learned a lot and added a few new tools to his bag of artist tricks by doing this study this year.

His final assignment was to take notes on the Billy Graham sermon. Instead of having him write about it we all listened to it together. I had him draw whatever he wanted to show the end of our year. I'd say this was a lovely end to our final day of middle school. I now officially have a high schooler y'all. It's so bittersweet. I'm so proud of all of his hard work, the way he's maturing, and how he is developing his own special passions and abilities. I can't see what God has for this amazingly creative young man.

  1. Congratulations on having a high schooler, and on doing such an amazing job at documenting your journey through this blog. My son will be in 9th grade next year as well. I have homeschooled two through high school before, but this will be the first boy. I am still finalizing my decisions on what to use for our first year of high school. Do you plan on continueing with HOD through High School?

    1. Thank you Patty! It feels good to be at the end. It was a great year. I do plan to use HOD World Geography next year, but I am not sure what are our plans yet after that. I do have some idea, but I need to see how this coming year goes first. I am looking forward to WG for sure!

Thank you so much for visiting :) I adore hearing from you!
